SFC Energy and Nel ASA enter development partnership for world’s first integrated electrolyser and hydrogen fuel cell system for industrial markets – key product to replace diesel generators

Brunnthal/Munich, Germany, August 18, 2021 – SFC Energy AG (F3C:DE, ISIN: DE0007568578), a leading supplier of hydrogen and methanol fuel cells for stationary and mobile hybrid power solutions, enters into a joint development partnership with Nel ASA (Nel). The Norwegian company is specialized in the production of hydrogen, storage systems and hydrogen filling stations.

The joint project of two market and technology leaders combines state-of-the-art and market-proven technologies. SFC Energy brings more than 20 years of fuel cell expertise to the project. Nel, a global leader in hydrogen for many years, is responsible for the electrolyser and storage technology. Both partners combine their comprehensive know-how in the field of environmentally friendly hydrogen and fuel cell technology in order to meet the challenges of climate change with forward-looking energy supply solutions. The goal is to jointly develop and commercialize the first integrated electrolyzer and hydrogen fuel cell system that has the potential to make a significant contribution to the race-to-zero and decarbonization of the global economy: from green on-site hydrogen production to zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electricity supply. Both partners aim to launch the first products in the second half of 2022. In a first step, SFC Energy and Nel address applications in the power range up to 50 kilowatts (kW). In a second step, the power range will be extended up to 500 kW. At present, a conventional diesel generator is usually used for remote, mobile and emergency power supply. The hydrogen fuel cell in combination with an electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen, on the other hand, is a highly efficient and environmentally friendly alternative. The system emits no carbon dioxide (CO2), no nitrogen oxides (NOx), no carbon monoxide (CO) and no particulate matter. With this first integrated electrolyzer and hydrogen fuel cell system, SFC Energy and Nel address a global, dynamically growing multi-billion market. “With Nel, we have gained a visionary and innovative partner. Together with a true technology and market leader, we are creating a new product category to replace diesel generators on a broad front with a 100% sustainable and emission-free solution. We are thus tapping into a fast-growing multi-billion euro market for industrial, critical and communication infrastructures as well as smart grid applications. This is also an important step to address the major challenges of climate change. The World Climate Report has clearly shown us that we must act now. Together with our partner Nel we want to and will make an important contribution to achieving climate neutrality and a low-carbon society”, says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy. “We are very pleased to be working with SFC Energy to develop hydrogen and fuel cell solutions that have the potential to make a significant contribution to emissions reductions in industrial distributed power generation applications. The integrated offering can replace high CO2 emitting diesel generators, making a significant contribution to the race-to-zero and decarbonization of the global economy. SFC Energy and Nel are both market leaders in their field and it is great to accelerate this development based on already available and proven technologies from both companies”, says Jon André Løkke, CEO of Nel ASA.
