HPS expands product range: First storage tanks for commercial and multi-family buildings

HPS Home Power Solutions (HPS), provider of picea, the year-round green hydrogen-based electricity storage system for buildings, has expanded its product portfolio. With the newly developed control and energy management unit “Forester”, up to ten picea can be interconnected. This means that, for the first time, a so-called “multi-picea” can also supply buildings with larger power requirements such as commercial properties or apartment buildings with solar power from their own roofs all year round. The storage capacity is up to 15,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.

HPS is constantly working to expand the performance of its products and open up new market segments. The cascade approach of multi-picea allows individual adaptation for different applications. This means that both power and storage capacity can be varied. By using always the same units of picea, additional economies of scale come into play in production and enable production costs to be reduced in the future.

“With multi-picea, we have responded to the great demand and developed a solution that offers higher storage capacities and performance in the building sector. In commercial properties and multi-family homes, consumers are thus able to fully utilize their solar power even in winter by means of flexible scaling of our proven year-round electricity storage system.” says Zeyad Abul-Ella – co-founder and CEO of HPS. “In this way, we are making a further contribution to the decarbonization of the building sector.”

First multi-picea in Meckenheim

The company Josef Küpper Söhne GmbH from Meckenheim has realized the first commercial property in Germany with a multi-picea. Five picea systems store the surplus solar power from the 98 kilowatt peak solar system installed on the roof and facade, thus covering the electricity and heating needs even in winter.

“We are pursuing an independent and clean energy supply for our customers and ourselves, because the time is ripe to enter a CO2-free society. That’s why we chose the multi-picea long-term storage system from HPS when designing the new company site in Meckenheim.” says Peter Küpper – Managing Director of Josef Küpper Söhne GmbH.

About picea

picea is the world’s first hydrogen-based electricity storage system for single and two-family homes. The Förster product extension allows cascading even for larger power and storage requirements. The surpluses generated by a photovoltaic system on sunny days are stored as green hydrogen and made available again in the dark season in the form of electricity and heat. In this way, picea achieves a CO2-free full power supply all year round and also reduces heating costs.

How does multi-picea work?

A higher-level control and energy management unit, called a forester, establishes communication between the individual picea, distributes energy evenly, and records the building’s energy flows. In this way, the forester allows the individual picea to work together in one application, the multi-picea solution. picea is the Latin term for spruce. One picea avoids about three tons of CO2 per year. This corresponds to an amount of CO2 that 130 spruce trees bind per year. The forester takes care of up to ten picea. The intelligent and superordinate energy management optimally distributes the storage of solar energy in summer and the power output in winter to the individual systems, which ensures the longevity of the individual modules.

About HPS Home Power Solutions

HPS develops and produces integrated systems for the storage and use of solar energy for detached and semi-detached houses. The Förster product extension allows cascading even for larger power and storage requirements. Based on green hydrogen, HPS offers solutions for decarbonizing the building sector. The Berlin-based company was founded in 2014 by Zeyad Abul-Ella and Dr. Henrik Colell and stands for security, independence and sustainability in decentralized power supply. The world’s first HPS system picea is electricity storage, heating support and living space ventilation in one compact product. Per year, a picea system avoids about three tons of CO2 and thus binds an amount of CO2 equal to 130 spruces. picea has won several prestigious awards, most recently the Handelsblatt Energy Award 2020, the Smarter E Award 2021 and the Innovation Award Berlin Brandenburg 2021.
